Home windshield repellent

Some commercial products repel water from your windshield while driving in the rain. This helps greatly with visibility, and also makes it easier to remove the ice that forms on the windshield. While not expensive, if you want to make a homemade windshield water repellent, you can do it with a handful of ingredients. You can make a simple solution with water and alcohol, or a repellent that comes closer to the ingredients of a windshield water repellent purchased in a store.

Instructions

Simple Solution

  1. Pour half a cup of alcohol into the measuring jug, and then pour the solution into the spray bottle.
  2. Measure 1 cup of filtered water and add to the spray bottle.
  3. Shake the bottle to mix the two ingredients. It will be warm, but not hot. Wait until it cools before putting the lid on.
  4. Shake the bottle to mix the two ingredients.
  5. Spray the solution on the outside of a clean, dry windshield. Use a clean cloth to clean it until it is completely dry.

Solution similar to a windshield water repellent purchased at the store

  1. Measure 86 ml of ethanol in the test tube and pour this mixture into the spray bottle.
  2. Measure 5 ml of alcohol and pour it into the spray bottle.
  3. Measure 9 ml of silicone or castor oil in the test tube and add it to the spray bottle. Use a clean bottle; do not add this solution to the same container..
  4. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients. The bottle will be warm but not hot. Wait until it cools before putting the lid on.
  5. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients.
  6. Spray the solution on the outside of a clean, dry windshield. Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe the windscreen until completely dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to completely dry the windshield after applying any of the solutions or you will have scratches and uneven application of the mixture.
  • Measure the alcohol in a well-ventilated area and away from the flames.
